This cosy shepherd’s hut for two is a perfect rural Bolthole

Tan Goeden is a beautifully appointed shepherd hut that sleeps two. It is tucked away down a narrow winding country lane, just a 10 minute drive away from Benllech on the island of Anglesey.

This lovely holiday hideaway sits in the grounds of the owner’s home Erw Newydd, in a self-contained orchard grazed by rare breed Ouessant sheep, whilst ducks dip and paddle around their pond. This rural and dog-friendly bolthole has been so thoughtfully presented, making the very most of its compact size.

You will know you are on holiday as soon as you arrive at Tan Goeden and step out of your car – it is so wonderfully peaceful. This Bolthole is designed to allow you to truly switch off – soak up the wonderful open space, big skies, the sound of the birds in the trees and hedgerows and a distant glimpse of the sea. The orchard is home to a red squirrel who frequents it regularly whilst buzzards nest in the trees nearby. At dusk, bats emerge to flit and fly through the air. Here you can leave work and busy lives behind and unwind at your own pace.

Pull into the drive and park up – Erw Newydd lies before you with Tan Goeden to your left.

Painted in soft greens which blend with its rural surroundings, Tan Goeden is a compact and cosy Bolthole. Do pack wellies or boots as the grassy path across the orchard to your Bolthole can be damp underfoot on wet days.

Climb the four wooden steps and step through the French windows into a pint-sized delight. The Welsh blankets, original artwork and crafts created by local artists and flowers picked fresh from the garden are a pleasure to enjoy.

The table and comfortable bench seats give you a lovely space for meals or to sit and read. On cool nights, the wood-burning stove warms the space in a jiffy, with a starter basket of wood ready to use. Warm evenings are a perfect opportunity to throw open the French windows and sit outside to enjoy a glass of wine and listen to the birds.

At night, the table and bench seats cleverly fold away into a pull-down full-size double bed. With plump pillows, a luxury mattress, a warm duvet and traditional Welsh blankets, you are sure to enjoy uninterrupted sleep.

There’s a compact kitchen with a tiny fridge, induction hob for two pans, kettle, toaster and a Belfast sink for washing up. Perfect for simple stovetop meals or breakfasts. With Prosecco, milk, tea, coffee and cake awaiting your arrival, you can start to settle in straight away. Homemade bread and scones with clotted cream and jam are both available to order from Tan Goeden's owner.

The shower room is deceptively roomy. There’s a good-sized shower for freshening up after a day’s exploring Anglesey, heated towel rail, WC, hand basin and mirror.

Erw Newydd is a smallholding and home to dogs, cats, chickens, ducks, sheep and ponies. Ouessant sheep graze around Tan Goeden and white Pekin and Runner ducks paddle around the duck pond to the front. To keep them safe and prevent escapees, the gate to the orchard must be kept closed at all times. Watch out for free-range chickens who may be pottering around! And if you are bringing a four-legged friend, do bear in mind that if they have a tendency to chase, then they should be kept on a lead.

Over the hedge are distant sea views over towards Traeth Bychan and Benllech, just a couple of miles away. What a wonderful place in which to unwind!

Tan Goeden is well located for exploring the east coast of Anglesey and Lligwy beach with its quirky beach cafe, Moelfre (home to Ann’s Pantry), Traeth Bychan and Benllech. All are within a 20 minute drive from the cottage. Amlwch, Beaumaris and Menai Bridge just a half-hour away and Newborough beach fifty minutes or so.

Walk parts of the Anglesey coastal path, blow away the cobwebs on magnificent sandy beaches or linger at one of the many local restaurants and cafes – the Ship Inn and The Old Boathouse at Red Wharf Bay are local favourites of ours.

Erw Newydd is also home to Tan Bryn, a cosy, pint-sized holiday cottage for two with a private garden.
