A cottage for four in seaside Beaumaris
Yr Hafan is a gorgeous light-filled topsy-turvy house, where a 1700s cottage has been modernised sympathetically and with comfort in mind.
Hidden away behind the cottage is a magical suntrap garden, bursting with songbirds and the scampering of red squirrels. To ensure this can be enjoyed to its maximum Yr Hafan is upside down.
Tucked away downstairs are two bedrooms – one spacious twin where sharing is not a chore. A family bathroom, with bath and shower, allows for sandy sun-filled days to be washed away. The final door downstairs opens to a master bedroom, with king-sized bed and masses of storage for holiday clothes galore. A stable door allows for quiet escapes up to the enclosed garden, book in hand or camera ready for those who love to sit and watch for a flick of a red tail and a chattering of hellos.
Up the stairs, a large open plan living area draws you in. The high ceiling, beams proudly displayed, creates an airy feeling and welcomes a calm light throughout. Light the log burner and cosy up for evenings in, a glass of wine in hand or films chosen. For chefs, a fully equipped kitchen ensures dining in is easy, Bluetooth speaker on and bop as you chop – although with numerous restaurants a stroll away, perhaps nights off should be encouraged for all.
Open the bifold doors and let the outside in – a balcony to gaze from as the dawn breaks, birds singing and the soft dappled light sneaking through the trees. When the days lengthen, all will be drawn to the suntrap decking, reached by a meandering path through a flower-filled garden. Light the barbeque or transport the kitchen cooked delights to the alfresco dining area under the stars.
For adventures out all is easy – a short walk into town past pretty cottages and mountain views drawing you to the seashore. Walk along the Anglesey Coastal Path, enjoying the sound of the seabirds or watch the passing yachts setting off on their own adventures. Visit Beaumaris Castle, the finest example of an Edward I concentric castle where history comes alive with exhibits for all to learn from. The views from the parapet are far-reaching and a wonder to behold. Catch your breath and tour Beaumaris Gaol, step back in time and be grateful you’ve been good!
Childhoods of old can be revisited along Beaumaris Pier – crabbing bait at the ready and let the challenge commence. Past records to be beaten, new memories to be made, a Red Boat icecream the ultimate prize. Boat tours set off from the much-loved pier – navigate around Puffin Island to check on those magical birds stretching their wings in the sunlight.
Beaumaris is a wonderful base from which to explore Anglesey and Snowdonia. A quick drive along the coastal road to Penmon to marvel at the iconic lighthouse and feast upon a Pilot House Café pizza. Mind the seagulls as they are keen on them too! Venture to Llanddona Beach to walk for miles along a sandy beach, kite flyers love this far-stretching beach. Tucked away further around sits White Beach (Fedw Fawr) – a walk down to this magical cove is well worth it for seaside swims and dolphin watching.
Across the Menai Strait, standing tall and proud stretches Snowdonia ready for artists to paint, photographers to capture and adventurers to conquer. Within just over half an hour they are yours to explore – so close to Beaumaris and yet such a contrast to this beautiful seaside town. Truly the best of both worlds is so very easy with Beaumaris as your base.
