Gwalia holiday cottage is a mid-terrace two storey farmhouse with a balcony and garden commanding rural views.
Down a pretty winding lane sits a delightful range of old barns close to the Menai Straits. Gwalia is amongst them and has been here for years. The cows have moved out and now the barn has been beautified with natural materials to become a lofty living space – comfortable and bathed with light. The upside-down layout really captures the gorgeous views of open countryside.
Light flows through the glass doors, illuminating the chic, open-plan living room with its shiny tiled floors. The glass doors out to the balcony lead you to your very own large Crow’s Nest. Bask here with nothing but lush calmness and a book to keep you company. The peace and quiet is evident the minute you arrive. A slinky spiral staircase draws you down to the terraced garden, which is the perfect sun spot to enjoy more peace. Or linger inside on the cream leather sofa or comfy chair. Cooks will be happy in the kitchen, compact but fully equipped, with glossy cupboards. Diners will be even happier to feast at the dining table with uninterrupted views over the rolling fields.
Bedrooms are downstairs. A double room with views over the garden and traditional décor: white bedding and Welsh style blanket. The other bedroom has twin beds but it can be turned into a king sized bed as it is zip and link. The owners have thought of everything. This is such a restful house.
The family bathroom is spotlessly sleek and modern with an abundance of hot water and an invigorating shower.
Ideally situated for cycle/triathlon and outdoors holidays with the quiet roads of Anglesey and the hills of North Wales just across the Strait. Newborough reserve, home of Sandman Triathlon, is a few minutes drive away with sea swimming, paddle boarding and kite surfing opportunities as well as running and mountain biking along the hilly trails of the 2000 acre pine forest that backs the beach. After an active day out, Gwalia is perfect to come home to – lock your bikes away in the garage and unwind with a well-deserved drink on the balcony.
You are in the middle of the countryside but are a short scramble from the best of Anglesey’s beaches for fabulous picnics and sea bathing, coastal walks and bird watching. There are pine forests to explore locally at Newborough – home of the red squirrels . Seafood to delight in down the road at The Marram Grass Cafe – all food locally sourced. The Menai Strait is home to many a mussel and oyster bed! The Sea Zoo is a must for the children and Foel Farm has the best farm experience.

Our favourite was Newborough Forest and Beach. Ran the Park Run 5K Saturday morning. Best coffee is Happy Valley Pavilion, Beaumaris. Truly relaxed retreat – we will return again next year.” (Beverley & Nick, September 2018)
