Just a scamper down past the local cottages you find a local pub and shop in less than a mile. Then head down to Menai and the Coastal Path. Here is the Anglesey Sea Zoo which is a gem for the children. Halen Mon, the home of world renowned Anglesey Sea Salt, is here too – so head off to Hooten’s for home grown produce and season it with smoked salt. Foel Farm Park is down the road and captivates tots – even adults love the tractor rides. Bryn Celli Ddu, an impressive Neolithic burial mound, is near Llanddaniel Fab and is crammed with unusual features from a turbulent past.
Within easy reach too of the National Trust properties of Plas Newydd and Penrhyn Castle and also convenient for the Anglesey Circuit (13 miles) and the Holyhead to Ireland Ferry (23 miles) you may never rest. The area offers many attractions to birdwatchers and other nature enthusiasts. Newborough Forest is a great destination for red squirrels, sand and sea and is the most idyllic setting with miles of beach and Llanddwyn Island at its end.
For food lovers there is the Michelin Star restaurant “Sosban and The Old Butchers” and “Dylan’s” a short 13 minute drive away in Menai Bridge and en route to Newborough Beach is “The Marram Grass Cafe” – famous for its local produce and an 8 minute drive away.

“Sorry I did not get chance to leave a review in the guest book but would just like to say thank you for the wonderful few days we have just spent at Afon Menai, it truly is an idyllic bolthole. The property was very clean, beautifully appointed and could not fault a thing. The super fast wifi, Netflix and hot tub even managed to keep a disgruntled teenager happy. I would not hesitate to recommend your company and look forward to exploring more of your beautiful Island, a weekend just wasn’t long enough.” December 2018
“Yet another wonderful weekend. The cottage is gorgeous and the hot tub is a welcome treat after a day walking. We are feeling well and truly relaxed and we will be back again very soon. Thank you so much.”
“Afon Menai has been great! What a lovely place. Well equipped and perfect for a family like ours. Lovely large garden and hot tub is a bonus! What a comfortable stay. Spent most evenings on Newborough Beach. Rhosneigr is also fun!”
“We have had an amazing time staying at Afon Menai. Our first time visiting Anglesey and definitely will be back. Love the location of the cottage. Most evenings spent at Newborough Beach, which Dexter the dog loved. Our son has loved the hot tub and says his bed has been really comfy. Highlights for us included Plas Newydd,, South Stack Lighthouse and Rhoneigr Beach with delicious food at the Oyster Catcher. Couple of days in Snowdonia as well with the ZipLine a hit! Can’t fault the facilities and enclosed garden great for the dog.”
“We really enjoyed ourselves. This cottage has everything and more that you need on a weekend break. Whilst here we visited Foel Farm, 2 Adults and 1 dog and a 14 month old baby. We enjoyed it and recommend it to everyone. We ALL went on the tractor ride, which was fun! We get our meat from Hootons, very nice. We would like to say thank you as we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and relaxing in the hot tub. Very peaceful and would definitely stay here again.”
” A perfect week exploring Anglesey from this fab cottage. Loved Rhoscolyn and Church Bay – hidden gems! Brilliant coast path walking all around the island. Had a lovely meal at Marram Grass. Plas Newydd National Trust up the road – well what a surprise! Amazing location. Can’t wait to return! P.S. Husband a hot tub convert! ”
“What a gem of a place! So well placed to visit everywhere, so comfortable. Chef very happy with kitchen and BBQ – he wants to move in! Oyster Catcher gorgeous Wavecrest Café and Zoe’s Cake Cabin simply amazing – you much visit. Dylan’s Menai Bridge – no words. Garden a real suntrap. Perfect week – we will be back.”
“A much needed long weekend for a very busy couple! This cottage was exactly what we needed. A gem find (well done fiance!). We stayed quite local as we wanted to relax. The hot tub was frequently used (bliss!) and the bed is so comfy! Better than our own so we wanted to take it with us! We visited the Sea Zoo, Beaumaris Castle (well worth a visit) and Bryn Celli Ddu – we like our history! Beautiful cottage, peaceful location and lots on your doorstep. We will be booking again. Thank you!”
“Gogeous week here for half term. 2 eight year olds and a 14 week old cocker spaniel had an amazing time! The boys loved crabbing and playing in the sand dunes and so did the dog! We all loved going to The Midland Tapas & Wine Bar in Beaumaris as well as Dylan’s – the boys’ favourite for mussels. Beautiful cottage – the hot tub was divine. A great addition to Boltholes & Hideaways cottages. Thank you!”
“Thank you for a fabulous week. We have enjoyed every minute! Newborough Beach and forest are magical, so beautiful, ad one of our favourite places, Llandudno, not far away. Beautiful cottage, thank you for letting us stay….we hope to be back!”
“We had a wonderful week staying in your lovely cottage. Ideally situated for both staying in when the weather was inclement (only one day) and also for exploring the local sites. Red Wharf Bay proved to have a fantastic eatery in The Old Boat House, with a beautiful beach for a walk. Snowdon is within easy travelling distance and worth a visit. Abersoch wa lovely and proved to have many independent shops, lovely to browse (and purchase!). The weather has proved yet again that Anglesey appears to have its own micro-climate! Many thanks.”
“Had a fab time in your beautiful cottage. Everything was spot on. Definitely home from home. You’ve thought of everything, right down to our dog Lily who loved the enclosed large garden. Perfect – in the words of Arnie “We’ll be back!”
“Lovely stay for our family in a peaceful setting. Afon Menai proved to be a great base to explore Mon. Highly recommend a meat at The Marram Grass Cafe as a treat. The children really enjoyed the hot tub after a day exploring the island. Thanks for a fantastic stay in your beautiful cottage. Well equipped so clean and beautifully decorated. We enjoyed the hot tub and bbq too! Another wonderful week on Anglesey. We’ve fallen in love with this island.”
“We have had an absolutely fantastic break. The cottage is the best we have ever stayed in – the facilities are excellent and we had everything we could possibly need (more than at home!). The hot tub was wonderful and when our families visited on 2 separate days they were blown away too. It’s so peaceful and pretty here and we had plenty to explore nearby. Foeld Farm was the highlight for our 22 month old. We’d recommend eating at the Coach House in Beaumaris – you enter via the Bull’s Head pub. Thank you for providing such a clean, well-equipped base for our holiday – we’ll be back!
“We had a fantastic week – we don’t want to go! The cottage has been better than home from home. So peaceful and relaxing in its wonderful setting. We have explored all the beautiful beaches on Anglesey , and our 9 month old labrador has enjoyed her first trip to the seaside. After a day exploring we all felt tired so coming back to the cottage and using the hot tub was a real treat. Thank you for making our stay so relaxing, comfortable and enjoyeable.
“We’ve had a lovely week in this beautiful cottage. Very well equipped, in a great location and the welcome pack was a nice touch. Our cocker spaniel, Issy, enjoyed her chew. Thank you we will definitely recommend this gem to our friends and family. The hot tub was a great way to relax at the end of a busy day.
“A beautiful place in a beautiful location filled with beautiful things! Thank you for all the little touches that made the whole week just “work”. The welcome pack was very tasty! The kids loved the garden and the games and the Wifi! We had a problem with the dishwasher whilst we were here and it was sorted so quickly – thank you. The response to what was really only a small problem was exceptional. The repair man came out whilst we were out and a new one was fitted within hours really. And for the one night we didn’t have a dishwasher we came home to washed dishes and some sweets to apologise for what was nothing. Exceptional service. We’ll be back!
“What a gem – just perfect! In an ideal location, spotlessly clean and beautifully decorated. Thank you very much – will definitely recommend and be back
“A lovely weekend away for 3 local mummies! A beautiful place in a gorgeous setting, we would never know we were only a mile down the road from home :). Everything we needed is here, lots of extras (salt, pepper, toiletries, towels etc). Hot tub is amazing! Had a lovely time, thank you.
“We’ve had a great week at your lovely cottage – and the hot tub is brilliant! A lovely clean and cosy place and very peaceful. Thank you very much.”
“Lovely property in a very peaceful location! Had a great week exploring Anglesey – in the sunshine. Twiggy (our lurcher) enjoyed the garden and beaches and we loved the hot tub! Had some lovely meals at Marram Grass (Newborough) and Bocca Italian (Menai Bridge). Will certainly be returning soon to Anglesey. Thank you!
“Afon Menai exceeded our expectations in all respects. It has a rural and peaceful setting with lovely views over surrounding countryside. The cottage was easy to find and the directions comprehensive. The accommodation was comfortable, well thought out and tastefully decorated. The kitchen was fully equipped and appliances of a high standard and easy to use. Everything needed for a pleasant stay was present, including super quick wifi broadband. Afon Menai was very cosy thanks to a super heating system at the turn of a dial with lashings of hot water on tap. After a busy day out and a lovely walk along Newborough beach the excellent hot tub was a fantastic way to finish the day. The back garden was secure for our cocker spaniel and the local lanes were good for early-morning walks. All in all, a cracking little hideaway! Hoping to visit again soon!” March 2017
